Congratulations on finding the perfect Ukrainian girlfriend. Now you want to marry her, but do you know how to select the right engagement ring?

• Choose a reputable jewellery brand. Your Ukrainian lady will keep this ring forever if the marriage goes well, so it’s worth investing in a good ring which comes from a reliable brand. Some trustworthy jewellery brands are Cartier and Tiffany & Co. It’s very normal to spend thousands of dollars or even five figures on an engagement ring because your marriage is the most important thing in your life. Your Ukrainian bride will be impressed if you give her a blue box from Tiffany & Co. (We all remember women screaming in movies when they receive a blue box, right?) Although Pandora is also a reputable jewellery brand, you shouldn’t buy an engagement ring from Pandora because the price is too low to justify the quality of an engagement ring at Pandora – most items at Pandora are only a few hundred dollars; some are under $100. Therefore, you probably shouldn’t go to Pandora for an engagement ring – that brand is more about silver jewellery for younger women to accessorise their outfits only. I had some clients who are divorced, and these women can’t even remember the brand of their engagement rings. One woman even said, “When my ex-husband and I went shopping for the engagement ring, he was only looking for the cheapest ring in the entire city. If you ask a local designer to create a diamond ring for your wife from Ukraine, that should be much cheaper than going to Tiffany & Co. or Cartier to buy a diamond ring. Hence, you can do some research online now and see where you can find a local jewellery designer that is able to design an engagement ring for you at a lower cost. In this way, you can choose the stone and tell the designer what kind of style you are looking for. The jewellery designer can even analyse the style and personality of your Ukrainian beauty, and then create a ring that matches her well.

• The stone doesn’t have to be diamond. Princess Diana’s engagement ring wasn’t a diamond ring. As we can see on Kate Middleton’s ring finger, it’s a blue sapphire. Clearly, it’s perfectly okay to buy a different stone to replace a diamond when you propose to your Ukrainian stunner. Some good options are sapphire, jade and ruby. These rings are probably more unforgettable due to their unique colours. If your lady from Ukraine was married before, her previous engagement ring was probably a diamond because her ex-husband was possibly quite boring. Since you are a creative man, it will be even better if you buy her a different ring.
